Plaza Mayor

MADRID PLAZA MAYOR – PLAZA MAYOR MADRID SPAIN

Plaza Mayor – Madrid is a vibrant and multi-cultured city, and it has activities and attractions to offer everyone. Many visitors to Madrid go to see such attractions as monuments, statues, and manor houses. One of the best places in Madrid to visit is the Plaza Mayor.

The Plaza Mayor is an extremely grand 17th-century arcaded square in the heart of Madrid. In the past, the square was the location of great festivals, ceremonies, plays, and even the crowning of Kings. Unfortunately, it has also seen some less than savoury events such as bullfights and the public burnings of heretics. What can’t be disputed is that the Plaza Mayor has played a vital role in Spanish history.

The days of the past are now long gone, but this beautiful square still remains. It is decorated with eye-catching, kaleidoscopic-coloured murals and is surrounded by baroque architecture, providing a stunning array of images for tourists to soak in. Standing at the Plaza Mayor feels like standing on the life-pulse of Madrid.

Tourists are free to visit the many plaza shops and cafes surrounding the square and enjoy the calm mornings, the busy afternoons, and the lively evenings. Many of the best tapas bars in the city can be found at the Plaza Mayor.

This extensive park is covered in trees, and has a large lake with boats, a swimming pool, and tennis courts. Just simply walking around the park provides an unparalleled look at the beauty of the Madrid Parks, and gives travellers a chance to get out and stretch their legs.

The park is also home to the Zoo of Madrid and the Parque de Atracciones. In the past, La Casa de Campo was once the hunting grounds for Felipe II. It was also a royal park. Now it is an area for public enjoyment.

The zoo here is extensive, and it contains nearly three thousand animals. Visitors will be pleased to know that the dolphins and parrots perform several shows daily, while the amusement park provides rides, restaurants, and bars.

If you are planning to visit the park, then it is recommended that you spend a full day there, as there is much to take in, and plenty to see. But one thing can be guaranteed, if parks and zoos are

Madrid’s ancient city walls are well worth a visit and the remains of the old Arab walls can still be seen. Originally, the walls surrounded the Settlement of Magerit, which later became Madrid. If you walk beside these ancient relics, breathing in the hot afternoon air, you can almost feel what it was like to live so long ago.

Keen observers will also be able to see Islamic Remains from the 9th and 10th centuries and later Christian relics from the 12th and 13th centuries. You can spend a full day or more here, as there is plenty to see and learn.

The Arab Wall provides the chance for you to see a piece of history, whilst getting outside to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine that Madrid is so renowned for.
